Leather Artisan
Submitted by: jennifer Bryerton Charles "Chuck" Pinnell and his five artisans make couture leather goods for equestrians, sportsmen, gardeners, and connoisseurs at a former train depot turned peach-packing business in Crozet. Pinnell Custom Leather makes couturein a ready-made world. "By taking it to the other end," Pinnell gives clients perfection. Pinnell's bright store-workspace doesn't attract many customers. "These aren't impulse buys," he explains. His best-selling half-chaps need 12 measurements, three months of workshop time, and $900. One staff member finishes the work after taking measurements and choosing worldwide leathers. "It's never the same," says Pinnell. Each initial pattern changes to match each customer's unique specifications. Custom tooling, silverwork, and semi-precious stones. |
