The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation (TRF) has an immediate opportunity for a Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving. Founded in 1983, the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation's mission is clear and simply stated: to save Thoroughbred horses no longer able to compete on the racetrack from possible neglect, abuse and slaughter. The sad truth is that a vast majority of the general public and even many racing fans are unaware of the grim fate that awaits thousands of Thoroughbreds each year. They assume each horse is assured a safe and graceful retirement once their racing days are over. Unfortunately, this perception does not reflect reality. The TRF exists to combat this reality and provide a safe place for these horses once their careers on the track come to an end.

The Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving will report to the CEO and will be solely responsible for the overall management of the Major Gifts & Planned Giving program. The successful candidate will be charged with managing relationships and securing support from existing donors as well as new prospects that are capable of making individual gifts of $10,000 and up. This highly visible senior development opportunity will manage all aspects of the giving cycle including qualifying and cultivating prospective donors and maintaining strong relationships with our current donors.

The Director of Major Gifts & Planned Giving must be passionate about the mission of the TRF and be articulate and effective in expressing that passion. Doing so will require impeccable communication skills including the ability to write well, to speak effectively in both large and small groups as well as in one on one conversations, and the ability and willingness to listen actively and attentively. Superior relationship building skills, both internally and externally, are an absolute requirement. A demonstrated record of success must be exhibited.

Specific Responsibilities:
• Set and meet annual fundraising objectives, evaluating the results and implementing corrective strategies if needed
• Call, email, and meet with donors on a regular basis to solidify relationships
• Demonstrate the ability to secure individual major gifts of $10,000 and greater through personal solicitations.
• Maintain a daily call list and schedule personal visits each month
• Schedule and conduct cultivation and solicitation meetings through phone, email and in person meetings

Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree and 5 years experience in non-profit fundraising focusing on individual donor development, major gift solicitation, and managing a portfolio of high net worth donors
• Successful and verifiable major gift fundraising with gifts of $10,000 or greater
• Ability to travel as needed
• Strong prospecting/cold calling experience
• Excellent oral and written communication and solicitation skills
• Ability to work effectively with various personalities in a fast paced environment with multiple priorities and frequent deadlines
• Must be level headed, have good judgement, a sense of humor and the willingness to lead and learn
• Prior experience with fundraising databases
• Demonstrated experience working with volunteer leadership.

The TRF offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Qualified candidates must submit a cover letter, resume detailing fundraising achievements, professional reference list and salary requirements to johnr@thoroughbredretirement.org
