Ayrshire Farm, in Upperville, Virginia, is seeking an experienced Horse Division Manager to oversee the care of its Shire horses, riding (dressage), driving (Achenbach method, dressage), and farm tack and other equipment. This position is a salaried position, reporting to the Ayrshire Farm manager. It is expected that this position will require 45-55 hours per week.



The Horse Division Manager must have a thorough knowledge of humane horse husbandry. The Horse Division Manager would be responsible for managing all aspects of equine care, supervising the grooms, and overseeing care, repair, and maintenance of the facility and all items in the facility.



Responsibilities/Duties:



  • Schedule and oversee all employees working within or for the Horse Department.

  • Create and maintain a schedule to exercise all horses according to their training level. ALL driving is done according to the Achenbach method, therefore, only persons thoroughly familiar with and experienced in the Achenbach harnessing and driving method need apply.

  • Plan and execute shows, drives, and appearances of the horses in all on-farm and off-farm appearances involving the public.

  • Upkeep and execute maintenance schedules for all vehicles, equipment, and carriages used in the Horse Department.

  • Ensure that daily tasks are performed cost-effectively and efficiently; purchases for feed and supplies are compared against market prices, bulk purchases researched, and that expenses fall within the budget. Horse Department Manager will be responsible for working with Farm Manager to prepare the annual budget for the Horse Department and to work with the Farm Manager to ensure that expenses are within budget and approved prior to purchase.

  • Create necessary Purchase and Work orders in the farm system for the Horse Department.

  • Schedule and assist with Veterinary appointments for the Horse Department.

  • Understand and maintain the Horse recordkeeping – all animals and their personal information must be entered into their respective folders and kept up-to-date. This information includes but is not limited to: Births, deaths, breeding, medical history, weights, treatments, vaccinations, hoof care, vet notes, registration numbers and names.

  • Assist with coordinating and conducting farm events and tours in which the Horse Department will have animals viewed, ridden, or driven.

  • Advertise and sell horses, tack, and carriages not in use or needed as per the owner.

  • Be familiar with the grazing plans on the farm and execute the plans with the Horses.



    Skills:



  • Must be very familiar with equine health, feeding, grooming, facilities care, presentation and maintenance,

  • Must be a proficient coachman able to drive and teach single, pair, 4-in-hand, and tandem. Proficiency in the use of a long whip required.

  • Must be a proficient rider and have the ability to teach others. Training in ridden and driving dressage a plus.

  • Excellent communication skills, including use of email, spreadsheets, experience in computerized animal management systems

  • Must possess the ability to work well with others to accomplish the tasks required to maintain an exceptional environment.
